About developers.hover.in
This is the developer home at hover.in , where articles & posts are contributed by the developers, and digital artistsĀ (and wannabe-cartoonists until we get another blog) . For the most part - this group blog will touch upon the following areas :
- erlang, python, system utils , and other stuff mostly on the LYME stack ( linux, yaws, mnesia, erlang )
- javascript, user interfaces , css , graphics discussions
- theoretical computer science, caching, CDN’s ,and scaling experiences
- annoucements & updates on features, open-source work, API talk, and even hiring
And oh! we’re giving away ssh access to a 4-node cluster, where we’re running a distributed crawler , a CDN , a time-machine among several other
things. If you have idea’s as to how we can clock it to any additional use that will help us take over the world, we have a couple of empty sets
of comfy chairs/tables, linux box’s , wifi across our brand new “headquarters” that sports a guitar, a bean bag , a sofa to crash , and a few of us for company.
Among the 5 ( UPDATE: + 3 interns ) member dev team ourselves - we’ve pretty much covered administration & networking, erlang & python , css & graphics , javascript & HTML , plugin development, testing et cetera . So dont mind us … you can just chug along doing what you love to do . My guess would possibly be contributing back to the community, scaling our crawler , the backend or our cluster , leading teams , formulating distribution and flowcontrol, or hack on prototypes in HTML /UI+javascript . We’ll even chip in a check at the end of the month as well. 8 )
About Hover Technologies / hover.in
A little about the company and product [1]. Sometime in 2007, Bhasker V Kode teamed up with Arun Prabhudesai a US-return IT/marketing 10+ exp dude, to co-found the startup and lead as CEO and chief-blogger [2]. Prior to this, Bhasker who leads the development team was with Bangalore-based startup - Tutorvista in the education space [3] Hover Technologies was officially incorporated in 2008, and the journey has
been fascinating so far. We were covered by Yahoo Developer Network [4] for our involvement in the community. Hover.in was also one of the
5 internet startups that was nominated at Proto.in [5] in Jan 2008 (the Indian startup showcase event) of our web-based product that
targets big web publishers and bloggers.
The product as such involves the in-text content delivery, drawing on considerable amounts of work in data retrieval, natural language processing, and distributed computing paradigms, apart from innovative takes on client-side usability challenges . Among our first few developers include a google soc [6] intern , as well as another Haskell / functional programming hacker, and two more recent cluster-computing hackers. We just got ourselves a nice plush office [7] and are looking for developers who want to play a major role not only within the company, but in the developer community, and both user & publisher audience moving ahead .So the ideal candidate will be someone living in Pune, India or to relocate. And I doubt anyone will be joining us for the salary we’re offering for the first 4-5 months - but with stock opts, deferred bonus’s and salary hikes, it’s going to be exciting times at hover.in as it grows [8]. Growth in terms of smarter algorithms, scaling our current 4 -node cluster, looking into our caching policies and CDN needs, building context across the words, lay the foundations for an ad network, tweaking our distributed crawler or making our proprietary message queue more robust, chalking out on how to open-source some of our projects, expanding our feature set , allowing our users to build truly contextual & semantic apps based on our API,or driving our adoption across India, and thereafter globally to equate the word hover with our startup.
We are currently amidst scaling up beyond our first major pilot test with several of India’s leading portals, so no doubt - someone with a strong research, great sense of usability and UX, and a passion to innovate across multiple streams is definitely the kind of person we’re looking to join the young team. We’re not big fans of growing a company with a gigantic team size - but rather build a large company with a smaller team. And personally we think if we can get bright minds together as the core of the startup - we can cross the chasm as a world renowned product where each person represents the company in their field - works with consortium’s, other startups, and be the face to the users , come up with strategies , and along with our VP - Data Minig , VP - Analytics and myself - pave the product roadmap, design the engineering setup and lead the team by take ownership of tasks that they are passionate about - which I’m sure will soon expand well beyond any specific boundaries and more to resonate with your skill sets and interests. We are looking forward to provide opportunities for the following roles :
- Lead Developer - Product / UI
- Lead Developer - NLP
- Developer
We need for people who are passionate about some of the following roles :
- leading strategies in reusable intuitive UI , UX for both the hoverlets rendered on user’s web pages, as well as our site
- having an eye for popular widgets, curating the showcase gallery & demos
- listening for feedback before deciding upcoming features
- Building the next generation of contextual , and in-text engaging content , be it a crunchbase hoverlet , a map hoverlet, music from last.fm or videos from youtube, a deck from slideshare, graphs from compete, conversations from twitter, and virtually any widget or 3rd party gadget out there. We typically work on erlang, python , javascript ( based on the excellent YUI ), and will be launching our facebook / wordpress / firefox plugins soon to be launched.
- automation of cluster administration & steering caching needs & systems
- integrate our product with various 3rd party platforms and look for synergies with our API
- take charge of the NLP research, especially in parts of speech recognition, classification and clustering for not just english, but pioneer with regional languages as well.
- overlook the community directory ( similar to firefox addons directory ) in particular with initiatives such as the 26th alliance.
- open-sourcing parts of our code, client-side & server side libraries building out the internal tools
- experiment with the static content & CDN needs
- Basically anything and everything else that you have always wanted to experiment on. go ahead - we’re going to back you completely.
You can ping Bhasker ( kode at hover dot iin ) if you’re interested to join the dev team - or please do us a favour and forward this to someone you think can hack with us.
